Learn more about Environmental Education NSW

As an organised movement, environmental education in NSW emerged in the 1970s, shaped by the Gould League, the pioneering work of Allen Strom, and the establishment of school NSW Environmental Education Centres, built on a much longer foundation of First Nations Peoples’ knowledge and connection to Country.

Today, Environmental Education NSW (EENSW) supports NSW environmental educators as the NSW Chapter of the Australian Association for Environmental Education (AAEE), the national peak body for environmental educators in Australia.

Our professional association empowers environmental educators across formal, government and community sectors to create transformative change for a regenerative future. EENSW supports members across schools, local councils, state government agencies, non-government organisations, tertiary institutions and private companies, and our strength lies in bringing these diverse sectors together around a shared purpose.

We work to build stronger regional networks that foster collaboration and skill sharing, and we connect our members with the resources, relationships and professional support they need to make a genuine difference in their communities.

Our programs and initiatives reflect the breadth of the sector we serve. We deliver professional development for NSW educators, including hosting a biannual NSW Environmental Education Conference, celebrate excellence through the NSW Environmental Education Awards, and coordinating Sustainable Schools NSW, a statewide initiative supporting teachers to embed sustainability across their whole community.
